What Patients Ask Most

Everything You Need to Know Before, During, and After Your Endodontic Treatment

What Does an Endodontist Do Differently?

group.image

An endodontist is a dental specialist who focuses on treating the inside of the tooth, particularly the dental pulp and root canals. While general dentists handle routine dental care like cleanings and fillings, endodontists are specially trained in diagnosing and treating complex issues like tooth infections, cracked teeth, and failed root canals.

Is root canal treatment painful?

group.image

Thanks to modern techniques and anaesthesia, root canal treatment is not painful. At The Endodontic Office, we use specialised numbing methods and advanced equipment to make the process as comfortable as possible—even for patients with high sensitivity or difficult infections..

You may feel slight pressure, but the procedure itself should feel no more painful than getting a regular filling.

When is root canal treatment needed?

Root canal treatment is required when the pulp is irreversibly inflamed or infected. Signs that you may need one include:

  • Persistent pain or throbbing in a tooth
  • Sensitivity that lingers after hot or cold exposure
  • Swelling or tenderness in the gums
  • A darkened or discoloured tooth

Sometimes, root canal treatment is also done electively to prevent future complications in heavily restored or damaged teeth.

What happens after a root canal?

Most patients experience mild soreness or tenderness for a few days, which is easily managed with over-the-counter painkillers (analgesics). If there was a pre-existing infection, some swelling or discomfort may occur, and antibiotics may be prescribed. We’ll provide full aftercare instructions and remain available if you need support during recovery.

Does a Root Canal-Treated Tooth Need Care?

group.image

Yes. After root canal treatment, the tooth becomes more brittle and is at higher risk of fracture. We strongly recommend placing a crown or final restoration to protect it.

Good oral hygiene, brushing, flossing, and routine dental check-ups are essential to maintain the health of the treated tooth.

Can a Root Canal Fail? Then What?

While root canals have a high success rate, they can sometimes fail due to:

  • Persistent infection
  • Cracked roots
  • Incomplete cleaning or sealing
  • Delayed placement of the crown

When this happens, we may recommend a retreatment or a minor surgical procedure (like an apicoectomy) to resolve the issue.

Why Are X-Rays Needed and Safe?

Digital X-rays and CBCT scans are essential during root canal treatment to:

  • Accurately assess the infection
  • Guide the treatment process
  • Confirm success and monitor healing

The radiation dose is very low – comparable to a few hours of sun exposure. At The Endodontic Office, we prioritise patient safety and only take X-rays when absolutely necessary.

What’s the Success Rate of Root Canal?

group.image

Success depends on the initial condition of the tooth:

  • Teeth with no prior infection: ~90–95% success
  • Infected teeth with no prior root canal: ~80–85% success
  • Retreated teeth with persistent infection: ~60–75% success

At The Endodontic Office, we use evidence-based techniques and digital diagnostics to ensure every case is treated to the highest standard.

How can I tell if my root canal has failed?

group.image

Signs of a failed root canal may include:

  • Pain returning weeks or months later
  • Swelling, tenderness, or a recurring pimple on the gum
  • Changes in bite or discomfort when chewing

We typically schedule a follow-up radiograph 6 months after treatment to confirm healing. If inflammation is still present or new symptoms arise, further evaluation is needed.
