Advice After Root Canal Treatment

After root canal treatment is completed, our doctors at the Endodontic Office will advise patients on what to expect and how to take care of their tooth.

Effective Pain Management

Root canal treatment is performed to relieve pain. After the root canal procedure, painkillers may be provided to aid the recovery process. It is normal for patients to feel discomfort right after treatment, this may take 2-3 days to subside. However, flare-ups can occur in a small number of patients following root canal treatment. The symptoms of an endodontic flare-up can range from extreme pain or pressure around the tooth to swelling in some patients. Patients will need to return to the clinic for management of the acute symptoms.

Effects of Local Anesthetics Post-Treatment

Local anesthetics are usually administered for root canal treatment. This will numb part of the tongue, cheeks or lips. The numbness may persist for up to 5 hours. This numbness can make it difficult to eat without accidentally chewing down on the cheek or tongue. Caution should also be exercised when eating hot food as you may scald these areas.

Post Root Canal Treatment Dental Follow-Ups

The majority of root canal-treated teeth will require a crown after treatment to protect the tooth against fracture. You may schedule a follow-up appointment with your referring dentist once the root canal treatment has been completed to have the crown fabricated. Prior to crown placement, please avoid biting on hard foods on the root canal-treated tooth.
