Mild swelling and bleeding might be expected from the surgical site after surgery; this may take up to a week to fully resolve. Here is what you can expect to prepare yourself before root canal surgery:

Immediately after your endodontic surgery:

• Avoid rinsing for the first hour as this may disrupt the initial blood clot.
• Avoid disturbing the surgical site with your tongue, fingers, or other objects. This is important to prevent infection and bleeding.

For the following days:

• After your endodontic surgery, our clinic will provide you with an antiseptic mouthwash. It is to be used twice a day for 5-7 days. This will minimize plaque build-up at the wound site. During rinsing, gargle gently. Also, do not brush the wound area for at least 3 days. This is to ensure that the sutures stay intact.
• The patient will be issued medical leave so that he or she can have proper rest after the surgery. It is advisable to consume a soft diet for 2 to 3 days.
• Smoking can affect wound healing in the mouth. We urge patients to refrain from smoking until the dentist can ensure that healing is adequate.
• A follow-up appointment will be arranged to have the sutures removed. Please return for your appointment so that we can review the wound site.
• Pain and swelling are expected after a surgical procedure. The prescribed antibiotics and painkillers will alleviate the pain and control any possible infection. Please consume the prescribed painkillers and antibiotics as instructed.
• Slight bleeding is normal for the first few days following the endodontic surgery. Apply pressure to the surgical wound with wet gauze for a few minutes and that will help to control the bleeding.
• If you experience severe swelling or excessive bleeding for more than two to three days, contact our clinic as soon as possible.
